Experience the 2024 Great North American Eclipse in Arkansas

On April 8, 2024, people across the U.S. will have the opportunity to see the Great North American Eclipse. In particular, Arkansas’ Ozark region near the Buffalo National River will offer more than three minutes of totality — making it an ideal destination for an eclipse chaser. To help you avoid long lines of traffic and crowds, both before and after, we’ve put together a five-day itinerary that will get you to your destination well before the eclipse - and give you a glimpse into the region’s best activities.

Set Up Camp

You’ll find numerous cabin options at Buffalo River Outfitters. Book a family cabin for up to six people or one of our two group cabins that sleep up to 10. Several luxury cabins are also available on the property. If you prefer to camp, spaces at public campgrounds, primitive campsites along the Buffalo National River and RV parks can be found nearby. Remember to book early before spaces fill up!

Use the rest of the day to explore the grounds before cooking dinner, playing games or even enjoying a campfire s’more.

Float the Buffalo National River

If you want to see the eclipse from the water, use Sunday for a scouting trip to find an ideal destination. A short excursion can give you an idea of the best spots to pull over and take in the view. Floating and fishing on the Buffalo is also one of the region’s biggest draws, so it’s a great way to take advantage of some of the Ozarks’ most-popular activities. If you don’t want to be on the water during the eclipse, scout your spot on land to make sure you’ll be ready the following afternoon.

Already know where to go and want to spend the night on the river? Check out our multi-day float trip page for helpful tips and information. Either way, be sure to save some energy for Monday’s main event.

Experience the Eclipse

Today’s the day you’ve been waiting for — the total eclipse. Whether you have decided to view the eclipse from land or water, you’ll want to spend the morning getting in place. Just after noon, the beginning of the partial phase will begin, with totality being reached just before 2 p.m. Be sure to pack plenty of water, drinks and snacks, most importantly, don’t forget your approved solar eclipse glasses. Enjoy the view!

Hike the Ozarks

If you floated on the previous days, get your land legs back — and avoid potential lines of traffic leaving the area — with a day of hiking. Complete one or all three of these nearby hikes to see the Ozark Mountains up close and personal. Once you’re finished, reward yourself with a giant cinnamon roll and a little shopping at Ferguson’s Country Store and Restaurant. If you’re in the mood for burgers and BBQ, head to Big Springs Trading Co. Both are located just minutes from Buffalo River Outfitters.

Get Some Culture

Just a short drive from Buffalo River Outfitters in St. Joe, you’ll find the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View. From April through October, you can visit this center to experience the region’s crafts, music and culture. Shop the Craft Village, where you can see artisans working on stained glass, leather goods, quilts and more. Eat breakfast or lunch at The Skillet Restaurant, where Southern cooking is the specialty fare.

As you drive back to camp, you may want to take in a scenic overlook or two. For example, Buffalo River Scenic Outlook on the edge of St. Joe will give you a final sweeping view of the river valley.

Don’t wait — book your 2024 eclipse viewing trip today!
